Help send radical kids and mothers to the US Social Forum

------------
Dear friends,
As you know, I have been doing childcare with Regeneración Childcare NYC
for over a year. It has been really exciting to be a part of building an
intergenerational movement with moms, kids, providers, young people and
volunteers from all different walks of life.
Over the past year, we've helped to coordinate several gatherings of
moms and kids from around the city. One request from all the moms is
that they would love to meet parents and people from around the US that

freEtech 2007 is going to be awesome!

freEtech is really shaping up to be awesome. I think that we might've picked too small of a venue even! ha!
Its been posted in the SD City Beat newspaper and emailed out to all Foundation 4 Change grantees. We've been getting lots of calls about it. A handful of people from hackbloc.org are coming and some MFA students from UCSD working on social software analysis are coming. Wow.
To all you radical techs out there. Lets start having these kind of open unconferences every couple of months. In europe they call them hackmeetings and they do them in big occupied social centers. If we did this with a wiki page, a space and two weeks, imagine if we took two months to plan it! Lets talk at freEtech about the next of these kinds of gatherings...
We're starting a schedule, so if you want to do a workshop or start a discussion or perform some music or show a film, go check out the schedule on the wiki and put your thing in! We also have flyers in english and espanol, so go print them out! All that stuff is here: sd hacklab wiki
If you're in san diego and want to help distribute flyers in english and spanish, please come by the City Heights Free Skool and pick them up! We have copies!
We also got an angry call from UCSD. That was funny. Good thing we decided to do it at the City Heights Free Skool, HOORAY for autonomous spaces!!!
me: hello?
caller: hi, i'm calling about freetech.
me: oh, great, how can i help you?
c: what's this for?!
me: ah, it's a free technology conference.
c: i'm calling from calit2. who are you? are with the group?!
me: i'm an mfa student, my office is on the 2nd floor.
c: you know there's a reservation process and fees...
me: yes, we reserved the two conference rooms on the second floor, but
we've decided to do it somewhere else, not at calit2.
c: oh. well. ok. bye.
me: bye.
Also, DIGG freEtech here!
So, here's Cory's (from boingboing.net) final response. No wonder we have such a problem with sexism, racism and homophobia in tech culture when the most famous people in the community are in denial that there's a problem...

Ex-Bracero and Immigrant Worker's Speaking Tour
Submitted by onto on Fri, 02/09/2007 - 7:37am
Lessons for Immigration Policy
April 18– May First: Speaking tour - Immigrant Rights, featuring an Ex-Bracero from the Asamblea Nacional de Braceros and an Immigrant Worker from Mexicanos Sin Fronteras.
President Bush and many Republicans are busy promoting immigration reform measures similar to the post-World War II Bracero program, in which migrant workers were little more than indentured servants with contracts that depended on specific employers. Workers were vulnerable to extreme exploitation and were unable to negotiate the terms of their employment.
The Bracero Program is key to understanding current immigration trends from Mexico. The Bracero Program allowed Mexicans to work on three or six month contracts in the United States to cover labor shortages and increasing negotiating power on the part of the US working class caused by World War II. During the two decades of the program, Braceros created social networks that became the base for future migrant flows.
Today, migrant workers and ex-Braceros are joined in a struggle for their fundamental rights. Ex-Bracerso are demanding payment of the 10% of their salaries that was deducted as a retirement fund during their temporary labor contracts. The money “disappeared†- billions of dollars lost either to corrupt US bankers or Mexican government officials.
Simultaneously, the new generation of migrant workers, many grandchildren and great grandchildren of Braceros, is demanding comprehensive immigration reform that includes normalization of their immigration status and the right to live their life with dignity in this country.
Speakers: A representative from the Asamblea Nacional de Ex-Braceros will offer first-hand testimony on guest worker programs, and will discuss their struggle to win payment of their retirement funds.
- A migrant day laborer will discuss the problems migrant workers confront on a daily basis in the US.
- A representative of the Mexico Solidarity Network will talk about the economic and social context of migration between the US and Mexico with special focus on the effects of guest worker programs, using the Bracero Program as an example.

Segundo Encuentro Estatal por los Derechos de los Inmigrantes - 10 y 11 de Febrero-Málaga
Submitted by onto on Wed, 02/07/2007 - 10:56am

ABOUT Dissent! G8 Infotour
Once a year the leaders of the 8 richest nations meet behind closed doors in secret with no publicized agenda or published minutes, to discuss the fate of the world. They’ve been making empty promises for decades about improving the environment, poverty in Africa, and lots more, but the fact is that the G8 is not the solution to these ills, it is the problem! We are preparing in Germany for large scale protests against the G8 meeting this June 6-8, 2007, and plan to come tell you about what is going on here. We have done over 200 presentations in 25+ countries since November 2005, and are now coming to your town!
In case you haven't had a chance to check out the big number of anti-G8 web-sites we have over here in Germany (or got lost on a German language site looking around for more English), we've attached an overview below of what our normal "foreign" presentation consists of. There are also many links below.
