Congressional Hearing in Brownsville Texas on Walls and Waivers

The House Natural Resources Committee, Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, led by Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Arizona), and Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife and Oceans, led by Del. Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-Guam), held a joint oversight field hearing on "Walls and Waivers: Expedited Construction of the Southern Border Wall and the Collateral Impacts on Communities and the Environment" at UT Brownsville on Monday April 28th.

Community Resposes to the Congressional Hearing

A couple of us from Houston IMC and anti-border wall activists from through out the Rio Grand Valley came to listen to the testimony, cheer for the anti-wall speakers and congress folks and jeer at the fear mongering tactics of Tancredo, Hunter and their flunkies. Of the 8 congressmen and women, 6 were against the wall and power grab by Chertoff. The location of UTB for the hearing was interesting as the wall would put parts of the campus on the south side of the wall, and try to funnel border crossers onto the campus to make their apprehension by the Border Patrol easier.

Texas Border wall plans laid out

from Houston Indymedia Today (4/11) at Rice University, Rice For Peace and Justice hosted a teach-in on the border wall featuring Houston Environmental Lawyer Charles Irvine and Brownsville Teacher and Activist Elizabeth Stephens.

The Teach in lasted for an hour in a full classroom for more than 50 students and faculty. Both presenters gave powerpoint presentations that exposed the environmental, cultural and economic damage a fence would cause, as well as the stealing of land from property owners and the unconstitutional process taking place, where the Department of Homeland Security is waiving more than 30 laws designed to protect the environment, wildlife and Texas history.

San Diego border fence proceeds slowly -

By ELLIOT SPAGAT

SAN DIEGO - Bulldozers are rolling again on the U.S.-Mexico border, moving hundreds of tons of dirt to make way for a 16-foot steel fence in an area that once was the most popular crossing for illegal immigrants.

But before the construction resumed recently, the 14-mile project in San Diego was stalled for years by legal challenges from environmentalists, budget problems and difficulties buying land. Those delays are now raising doubts about a government plan to extend fencing to 370 miles of the Mexican border.

Marcha Migrante II @ Mexico/US border, 02.-17. Feb 2007

The caravan was traversing the entire MEXICO/US border from San Diego to Brownsville Texas and back. Stories were gathered along the border journey and shared at the final People's Immigration Hearing in San Diego as well as taken directly to Washington DC. The goal is a humane and comprehensive immigration reform.

The Migrants March was planed by Border Angels, a civil right group based in San Diego, California: Founded by Enrique Morones in 2001, Border Angels is a non-profit organization supporting humanity. The organization consists of extraordinary volunteers who want to stop unnecessary deaths of inviduals traveling through the Imperial Valley desert areas and the mountain areas surrounding San Diego County, as well as the areas located around the United States and Mexican border. The high percentage of unnecessary deaths have been results of extreme heat and cold weather conditions, in addition some have sadly been the results of racial-descrimination crimes.

"Migrant March I" took place from February 2-28, 2006. A caravan of vehicles crossed the country San Diego to Washington, D.C. and back demanding justice for the migrants, no more deaths, asking the communities to take to the street and march against HR 4437 & support humane and comprehensive immigration reform. (see :: Angry White Kid report)

Marcha Migrante II - overview

San Diego (02. Feb): We planted the first of 4400 crosses and honored Oscar Garcia Barrios killed at border May 18th, 2006 as a very emotional letter was read (by Micaela Saucedo) from his mother. We then said good bye to all and 25 autos joined the MARCHA MIGRANTE II as we headed to our first stop the Holtville cemetery. Holtville (02. Feb): We planted 440 crosses for the unidentified but not forgotten migrants buried there. Yuma (03. Feb): We were met by 100 local community members and we placed 100 crosses for those that have died in the region the last 2 years alone. Phoenix (03. Feb): In the evening 500 people met us as we camped out and joined Elias Bermudez and other Arizona locals on a "fast for justice" 464 more crosses on the fences surrounding the camp site. Tucson (04. Feb): Isabel Garcia shares two heartbreaking stories of the tragic deaths of two children. Father Carney, Kat Rodriguez, Alexis Mazon and all of us were moved to tears as 12 year old Mathew (the youngest of the caravan group, asked "why we killing all these people" as 200 crosses laid in the middle of our circle. Douglas (04. Feb): Deliver supplies to migrants and to remember the tragic murder of Francisco Javier Dominguez (killed in the region, last month)

McAllen to Brownsville (09. Feb): Hundreds gathered to say welcome and join the caravan !!! We held a rousing rally, heard heartbreaking testimonials and had car after car join the caravan!!! It was a beautiful sight as 30+ autos joined MARCHA MIGRANTE II and went from McAllen to Weslaco to Brownsville for presentations and to hear testimonials. Eagle Pass (10. Feb): We meet with the Institute of Mexican Abroad, Border Commission. We are again welcomed with wonderful kindness and support. We attend meetings and forums with locals, local authorities and discuss realities, policies and here stories of why we need the humane immigration reform NOW! Towards San Antonio (11. Feb): Stormy weather but nothing like what our brethren face when they travel North... Tomorrow I fly to Nebraska to debate F.A.I.R. president Dan Stien, others go to HUTTO PRISON for protest vigil and others attend Human Rights Border conference.

MIGRANT MARCH II (February 2-17, 2006) San Diego to Brownsville to San Diego

“MIGRANT MARCH I” was a huge success as a caravan of vehicles crossed the country San Diego to DC and back (February 2-28, 2006) demanding justice for the migrants, no more deaths, asking the communities to take to the street and march against 4437 & support humane and comprehensive immigration reform. In the Spring immediately following MARCHA MIGRANTE I, ( 5 million people marched ! )

Next week…on Friday…MARCHA MIGRANTE II will again start February 2 (anniversary of Guadalupe/Hidalgo treaty and the day of the Candelaria) from San Diego, this time instead of crossing country, they will cross the entire US/MEXICO Border, from San Diego to Brownsville, Texas and back (Feb 2 – 17, 2007) which will culminate with an ALL PEOPLE’S IMMIGRATION HEARING in San Diego on February 17.

The caravan will gather stories along the border journey and share these stories at the February 17th even. Later will take stories directly to Washington DC as “we want humane and comprehensive immigration reform now!, we marched, we voted and now that the Democrats are in control of the house we want action” states Enrique Morones of BORDER ANGELS & GENTE UNIDA the originator of the MARCHA’S MIGRANTE.

MARCHA MIGRANTE II is finalizing plans for this historic trek and welcomes others to join in participation, “this is as grass roots as grass roots gets and its up to the people to say where, when and what we will do during the “MARCH/CARAVAN”.

MARCHA MIGRANTE II has scheduled special tributes to Oscar Garcia Barrios in San Diego (steps from where he was shot at San Ysidro port of entry May 18, 2006), Douglas, Arizona (where Francisco Javier Dominguez Rivera was shot and killed by border patrol earlier this month) and in Redford, Texas a tribute to Eziquiel Hernandez (shot by Marines in 1997)

“MARCHA MIGRANTE I, was a huge success and we want to thanks all that supported us, this year has again generated tremendous interest and we are looking forward to visiting communities along the entire 10 state US/MEXICO border, on both sides of the border, join us”. Enrique Morones
