Technology in Resistance
"Who wants to get fucked by a robot?"

I'm in SF this weekend going to Arse Electronica. If you're interested in the intersection of art, technology and sex you should definitely drop by the conference.
Last night was the first event and it was really amazing. Even though it was rather disorganized, with lots of improvisation and not so hot scheduling, there were two great performances. The Electronic Orifice Orchestra demonstrated their kegel instruments, which are inserted into orifices and played by varying pressure on your kegel muscles. Their costumes were awesome.
Definitely the highlight of the evening, though, was the Kink.com demo of Fucking Machines...
I'm so excited about Arse Electronica, which I'm going to tomorrow, driving up to sf. But, I had a long day, so I'll just give you a link to read more...

A good friend of mine works with the RegeneracÃon Radio collective in Mexico City. It was good to hear her voice in this announcement about the situation there. Give it a listen, its an awesome summary of what's going on and its a great reminder of how important autonomous radio is.

Communication is our weapon
A really comprehensive and good article, I think that a lot of this is relevant to discussions of gender and communication in lots of contexts outside of technology also...

New Indymedia Film Documents the Immigrant Rights Movement of May Day 2006

The Giant Awakens: In 2006, a historic mobilization for immigrant rights swept the US as millions took to the streets. Corporate news media predictably covered the marches with a mix of surprise, ignorance, and racism, yet grassroots media activists were there to document the voices and the stories behind this mass movement.
¡Gigante: Despierta! (Giant: Awake!) is a DVD compilation of short films from around the U.S. documenting the story of May Day 2006, due to hit the streets in the weeks before May 1, 2007. The project was shot, edited, and brought together by a network of independent video activists, graphic designers, community organizers, musicians, and immigrant rights activists.
The film's producers describe it as "a collective memory and a tool to inspire action this May Day 2007, when the Giant will raise its voice again to say: we are one people, without borders; we are here, and we are here to stay!" Immigrant rights organizers have announced another round of massive May Day marches for amnesty this year in San Francisco and other cities across the U.S.
Here's an extreme example of techno culture supporting mysoginy and violence against women. This blogger, Kathy Sierra, of the blog Creating Passionate Users, has been receiving numerous death threats and threats of sexual violence, and has received very little support from the rest of the blogging community.
You can read her blog entry about this experience here:
Death threats against bloggers are NOT "protected speech" (why I cancelled my ETech presentations)
I just wrote this reply to her...
